Review of Mellody Squonk Box by Loud Cloud Mods

In today’s review we will take a look at the rare Mellody Squonk Box mod from the Polish company Loud Cloud Mods.

The products of Loud Clouds Mods company and its permanent leader Tomasz Rudzinski are, as they say, “widely known in narrow circles”. I.e. famous first of all among fans of original devices, which as a rule do not fall into the hands of ordinary mortals like me. The most famous creation of the Pole, which even I came across (though in the form of a clone) is a boxmod made of stabilized wood Mellody Box (in the new version called BTTO) on the DNA board, which was not passed by the ubiquitous Chinese naughty hands. These devices are made in limited copies and even on the manufacturer’s website, despite their cosmic price, they are constantly in the SOLD OUT state. Today’s review is dedicated to another device, also named Mellody, but addressed to fans of bottomfeeders, though not as bright as the version from Stabwood, but no less interesting.

Mellody Squonk packaging

The device is packaged in a rather simple box made of heavy cardboard with a magnetized lid, which even many Chinese seem to have stopped using long ago. On the front side in the center there is only the name (not even Mellody Squonk, but Mellody Box), and the manufacturer’s logo is nestled on the bottom right. australian vape shop adelaide From the design we can note only five horizontal stripes highlighted with varnish, there are neither characteristics nor the manufacturer’s address anywhere on the package. In general, the Loud Clouds Mod company is too famous to write anything more about it. On the bottom part there is a sloppy piece of painter’s tape, on which the serial number of the box is handwritten; I got the 122nd one.

Inside there was nothing but the Mellody Squonk itself, neatly placed in the polystyrene foam. It’s a royal set, nothing to say, at least a 1.5 mm hexagon could be useful here.

Appearance and design

The boxmod has small dimensions, of course, not as miniature as many other mechanical squonks, but the device is still quite compact. The mod is made in the familiar style of the manufacturer: in the center there is a metal insert dividing the body into two halves: with a button on one side and engraving with the name Mellody Squonk and serial number on the other. The main material of the case is plastic (delrin, aka polyformaldehyde), which in my copy was black in color. This type of plastic is resistant to high temperatures (depending on the brand and manufacturer, delrin is up to 180°C), scratches and abrasion, and can be considered a practical and suitable material for the construction of such devices, although not the cheapest. The whole surface has a rough coating, it seems to be a mediablasted finish, both on plastic and metal parts, the grip of the surface with the palm is excellent and the device is simply pleasant to take in the hand (you bet…).

The side walls are rounded, there are sharp corners on the upper and lower planes, because of the low height the lower ones can rest in the palm of your hand, but they don’t cause any discomfort. On the lower half of the case on the side of the button there are five deep stripes, symbolizing a musical staff. By the way, the devices from Loud Clouds Mod owe their “musical” name to these notches, and not to some mythical properties to reproduce musical sounds. I don’t need to say that the strips quickly get clogged with dust and dirt and will have to be cleaned to keep a tidy appearance. The cutout for the bottle is located at the end, it is shallow, but quite comfortable for pressing with any finger.

Mellody Squonk Boxmod Connector Mellody Squonk Boxmod Connector Adjustment

The steel connector pad has no decorations or notches, is flush with the body and has a diameter of 22 mm. The plus pin is gold-plated and provides liquid flow, that is, with an internal channel and one that many vapers have long since gotten used to – adjustable. Manually. That is, in order to ensure the contact of your drip with the mod, you need to unscrew the pin (here the reverse thread) to the required length with a 1.5 mm hexagon. For fans of perfectionism will be a special pleasure to find a position where the contact will be sure and there will be no gap between the atomizer and the connector.

Mellody Squonk device is undoubtedly very interesting, convenient, and practical, especially the bottle and the method of refilling, although there are its own peculiarities. Mosfet saves you from the need to clean the contact group, but with it it is no longer an “honest mechmod”, especially considering the locking system and protection against over-discharge, as in some electronic device. When pressing the button for the first time, you can feel a noticeable delay of almost a second, but already at the second actuation is instantaneous. The board obviously makes its own adjustments to the work, and they are noticeable in use. A couple of times I caught misfires, but I’m not sure whether the battery lost contact with the lid (the pin in it can unscrew if you clamp it weakly, and if you tighten it strongly, you can sell the contact in the can), or with the drip, or whether the board is to blame. At the same time, the device gives all of its voltage to the battery, so the Mellody Squonk is still more of a mechanical device than an electronic one in this regard. I haven’t seen manual adjustment of the atomizer pin for a long time, but the manufacturer left it in the first place in order to exclude the spring from the circuit and reduce possible current losses. For everyone else it can add a lot of unforgettable minutes in an attempt to catch the very position when there is no gap between the drip and the connector, and at the same time there is a sure contact. Therefore, the box is better to “friend” with a certain atomizer at once and then you can forget about this pin. I liked the device, but its price – well, to hell with it!

“Vaping is cheap!” – they said. In my opinion, the device from Cloud Cloud Mods is not perfect at all, in some places it is frankly old-school, but it works perfectly and looks great. And the realization that you’re holding a big bundle of money in your hands also makes an impression.
